The studio

A house by the sea, a room full of light, and the patience to keep looking

Portrait — Angeles in the studio (to supply)

Angeles M Pomata was born in 1972. She studied psychology in Madrid and practised privately there for more than a decade — work that taught her to look closely and patiently at a person, and to take seriously what beauty can do for someone who is struggling.

In 2007 she left the city for the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, in Níjar on the dry south-eastern coast of Andalucía — “because of the serenity and candid beauty here.” She went to write, and finished her first three books. Painting began as a break from writing, “a manual activity, something to rest my mind on” — and slowly took over.

She is entirely self-taught: “I have not had teachers, tutors or counselors of any kind.” Oil landscapes came first, then watercolour for birds and animals, then mixed media and collage. She opened her first public catalogue in 2013 and has painted most days since.

She belongs to no school or movement. What she is after stays constant: “art is goodness, beauty and/or truth” — and a painting that “speaks for itself.”

“One cannot embellish reality when painting, but one can depict it in its true colours.”

Angeles M Pomata

Influences she names

Velázquez above all — “a capacity for psychological penetration that is unmatched.” Van Gogh, Turner, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro; Bonnard and Les Nabis; the Camden Town Group and the Group of Seven; and, if she had to name one woman, Olga Wisinger-Florian.

“My aim in art is to capture and reflect the reality around me, while continually exploring other techniques and media that offer new possibilities of expression.”

Materials

Oil on linen canvas, board and wood panel. Occasional watercolour, gouache and collage. Soft impasto; colour worked for harmony rather than for effect.
